Ian Schumacher – NUPI Graduate: Commercial Dive / DMT
I wanted to be a diver since I saw the movie “The Abyss” as a little kid. The idea of working underwater was just fascinating. When I was in my early twenties I started learning about the divers in the Navy and commercial diving around the world. The stories of comradery, danger, and excitement always had my imagination running. When I got laid off from my job at a medical device manufacturer in 2013, it turned out to be the best thing that ever happened as I immediately discovered and enrolled in National University Polytechnic Institute’s (NUPI) Marine Technology program. Information was easily accessible, and enrollment was straightforward and easy.
Classes are small, fast paced, and focused. Our instructors have extensive knowledge and experience from years of serving in the Navy and working in the Gulf of Mexico. During my time at NUPI, I achieved in-depth knowledge in diving subjects and a high level of camaraderie with my classmates. The mentality in the program is ‘Give it all or nothing.’ From early morning physical training, to watching each other’s backs in murky green water, therein flows a sense of team spirit that words cannot easily describe. The subjects presented to us ranged from learning emergency medicine, diving physics, and mixed gas diving to operating decompression chambers, using hydraulic power tools, and building complex pipe projects, all in zero-visibility. These evolutions boosted my confidence and pushed my mental and physical boundaries harder and further each week until graduation. Our instructors served as the foundation of our competence and were the mentors that prepared us for life as a commercial diver, working in inland and offshore environments.
Upon graduation, in June 2014, I was a different person; ready to accept and navigate any challenge that awaited offshore when my career began. I look back on everything I learned at NUPI with pride. Since gaining employment at DeepCor Marine Inc. in Louisiana, I have been applying my core diving and tending skills with proficiency, as well as adding to my skillset each day offshore or while working in the dive shop. When asked about becoming a commercial diver, I always recommend NUPI as the first step. NUPI’s instructors will provide definitive training that is clear, precise, and crucial to earning one’s place offshore. So once you make the decision to become a commercial diver, enroll now, leave the dry part of the world behind and join the few who make their living on the bottom of the sea.
Jason Heldt – NUPI Graduate: Commercial Dive / NDT
I entered the Marine Technology program at National University Polytechnic Institute six years after being honorably discharged from the US Navy as a Hospital Corpsman. I am a single father of two children and needed to find a career that could have the potential to take my family to the next level. After doing my research, I found that with National University Polytechnic Institute.
Prior to attending National University Polytechnic Institute, I didn’t have any knowledge of diving or the professions related to diving. Once I was enrolled, I was exposed to a world in which I was not familiar. National University Polytechnic Institute’s Marine Technology program had a structured environment for learning and also incorporated real world education from instructors that have years of experience in their field of instruction. Also, with the military like structure, it was easy to find my place within the class as we all shared a common goal: we all meant business! Through constant teamwork, the guys I met in my cohort were not only my classmates but they became my friends as well. I plan on maintaining contact with these thirteen guys indefinitely.
During my training, I decided to take the Non-destructive Testing specialty with little knowledge of what lie ahead. I was unaware of the fields involved in Non-destructive Testing and, as I gained this knowledge, I really took it as a challenge. With my dedication, along with the quality of instruction from Mark Rubio, ASNT NDT Level III, I am proud to say that I completed the eight-month program with all areas of certification in Non-Destructive Testing!
Because of the training I completed during my time at National University Polytechnic Institute, I am excelling in the NDT industry as a Non-destructive Testing Technician for Applus RTD in West Minister, CA. To keep my feet wet, I also work for Muldoon Marine Diving on weekends. Life is golden! This program has been valuable to not only my life, but that of my family’s as well!
